Lubbock Mayor Glen Robertson declared a state of disaster for the City of Lubbock just before 11 p.m. Sunday, December 27, 2015.

According to city officials, the declaration was made so the city can receive aid from the state and will last seven days. The city council is expected to renew the disaster status later this week.

The Lubbock Fire Department announced Sunday night via a Facebook post they and other first responders are unable stop to help stranded motorists due to high volume of calls and suggest making sure tailpipes do not become blocked by snow, otherwise carbon monoxide might fill the car and suffocate occupants. The post appears to have been removed after a few hours. Stranded motorists will need to call a tow truck.

Travel is highly discouraged with a number of road closures.

If you must get out on the road, make sure you have these essentials.
