UPDATED LP&L Weather Statement – December 27, 2015: 4:00PM)

City of Lubbock officials received briefing from the National Weather Service and are preparing for the second wave of strong winter weather moving into the area Sunday afternoon.  It is expected that the second round of winter storms will bring 4 to 8 inches of snow with sustained winds of 40 miles per hours and wind gusts of 60 miles per hour.
Lubbock Power & Light (LP&L) officials participated in the afternoon briefing session and are working hand-in-hand with City of Lubbock emergency response departments in order to combat the continuing effects of the strong winter storm.  Crews have been in the field on an ongoing basis since Saturday night and continue to work on damaged areas of the City’s electrical infrastructure.  At this time, LP&L is anticipating ongoing scattered outages into the evening hours.
A total of 2,300 LP&L customers experienced an interruption of service late Saturday night/early Sunday morning due to high winds.  Crews were able to restore power to all customers affected by the first round of storms by 4AM Sunday morning but the high winds continued to knock out power through the morning hours.  150 LP&L customers are currently experiencing an interruption of service as the second wave of winter storms move into the South Plains region but LP&L officials report those customers will be restored within the hour. 
LP&L has all available resources deployed in the field.  Linemen, field service crews, additional service vehicles, contracted tree-trimming crews and dispatch personnel are continuously working on outages scattered throughout the service territory.  A joint effort will remain intact with all areas of Lubbock emergency response working together to keep power on and citizens safe throughout the afternoon and into Sunday night. 
“Wind and ice accumulation are typically the most damaging elements for electrical infrastructure.  However, heavy snowfall presents its own set of challenges in terms of the mobility and access of trucks and equipment to various parts of the service territory.  The ability of LP&L service trucks to get into affected areas of the service territory has been hindered by the snowy conditions but crews will continue to work around the impediments to restore power.
If a customer experiences an interruption of service, they are encouraged to send a text/email with their name, address and brief nature of the outage to lightsout@lpandl.com. They may also call 775-2509 to report their outage through the LP&L automated system.  If a customer has reported their outage and do not see a crew working in eyesight of their property they should not be alarmed as it means the source of the outage is not in their immediate proximity.
 We appreciate the patience and understanding of our customers as we work as quickly and safely as possible to keep power on to all parts of the service territory.  Lubbock is experiencing a very large storm event and wind and harsh winter conditions continue to pose problems and risks for our hardworking men and women currently in the field.  City of Lubbock and LP&L crews have worked mightily in extremely harsh conditions to combat the effects of the severe weather we are currently facing.  We ask everyone around the City to please be safe and know that our crews will not stop working until the storm has passed and all of our customers’ power is safely restored.”
