Essential Items for Winter Weather Driving

Travel on Sunday, December27, and Monday, December 28 is highly discouraged as winter weather continues to impact the Texas Panhandle and Eastern New Mexico; many highways have been closed. If you absolutely must be on the road, pack as many of these items as possible:

Blankets

If you happen to get stuck without shelter, blankets can save your life. Pack away a few heavy-duty wool blankets or a down blanket if you have one. In a pinch people have used newspaper, car mats, etc. to add an extra layer of insulation.

Flashlights/Road Flares

During low visibility conditions these can be used to signal for help if you are stranded.

Shovel/Cat Litter

Cat litter, sand, anything with grit can be placed under your tires to create traction if you are stuck in an ice patch. A small, foldable army shovel is ideal to conveniently store, but have available to shovel away ice and snow and disperse gritty material for traction.

Food/Water

If you are traveling and happen to become stuck without help, food and water are essential. Peanut butter is easy to pack away without fear of spoiling and contains a lot of calories, something that will help your body generate heat.

Phone Charger/Battery Pack/Small CB Radio

Communication is key. Be sure to have ways to call for help if you are stranded and redundancies in case of drained batteries.

Others

Ice scraper, extra gloves, lighters, matches, etc., any of these items can be stowed away in advance of a storm so you will never be caught unprepared.
