Tonight (7/19), just after 10 p.m., the Mega Millions drawing will take place.  Six numbers will be drawn that could make someone the winner of the 5th largest jackpot prize in Mega Millions history.  The estimated annuitized jackpot is $555 million.

I rarely play these lottery games.  I might buy a few scratch-off tickets as stocking stuffers, and, when these Mega Millions and Powerball jackpots get into the stratosphere, I'll usually cough over a few bucks for that, too. That will be the case this evening.

I completely understand the infinitesimal chances of winning. I've heard the old cliche that one has a better chance of getting struck by lightning than winning the lottery. Random lightning bolts notwithstanding, I still consider myself one who has a tendency to buck the odds.  For example, I'm alive and kicking today despite the way I used to drive as a teenager.   Eventually, someone is going to win this jackpot, right?  I also realize that almost every major jackpot winner also thought their chances of winning were zilch.  So, why not give it a shot?

The cash value of this jackpot is around $317 million. While you're thinking about ways you could spend that much cheese, keep in mind that East Texas is due for a major Powerball or Mega Millions winner.

Check out the graph above, one big winner from Katy and another from Houston and that's as close as it gets to the Pineywoods.  It's about time that the lucky numbers filter into Deep East Texas.

If I do win the jackpot, I believe the first thing I'll do is bribe Mother Nature and ask her to bring Autumn into the area.
