On the "retro rack" is a singer who had many hits songs, was controversial and helped pave the way for other female artists to make their mark in country music.

 

Dottie West started her singing career on the radio when she was 13 years old. She also studied music at Tennessee Tech.

She was the first female country artist to win a Grammy Award in 1964 with a song she wrote called "Here Comes My Baby". She also joined the Grand Ole Opry that year as well.

West recorded hit songs that spanned the 60's, 70's and 80's. She also recorded Number One hits with Kenny Rogers in the late 70's and early 80's.

But of all the hits she had, she will always be remember for the smash crossover song "Country Sunshine". It was written for Coca Cola.

Dottie West died in 1991 from injuries suffered in a car accident on the to appear at Opryland.
