The Lubbock Police Department is partnering with Lubbock Fire Rescue this year tor crack down on fireworks violators.

Officers may even be issuing citations over $1,000 to those who use fireworks within city limits, which is illegal.

Last year, 12 citations in all were handed out for possession of fireworks within the city limits, but authorities say that number could go up with Independence Day.

According to Steve Holland, Division Chief for Lubbock Fire Rescue, illegal fireworks did more than $112,000 in damage and put $8.5 million dollars' worth of property at risk in 2018.

If caught, most officers will simply ask residents to stop using their fireworks. But if the usage continues, fireworks violators could be fined more than $1,000 and have their fireworks confiscated.
