What’s Coming to the Old Toys “R” Us Building on Slide Road?

As I drove down Slide Road, I noticed the crazy parking lot outside the old Toys “R” Us building. As you can see in the picture above, it's all torn up and there are construction machines outside. So that made me wonder.

After doing some digging and calling, WCA Design Studio LLC said they're working on renovations for something new to come. The renovations are happening on both the exterior and interior of the building.

But why is the parking lot the way it is, you ask? Apparently, those machines and the work itself made it look like that. As soon as everything is done, WCA said they will have to redo the parking lot as well.

So the shell of the space is getting fixed for new tenants. So what exactly is coming? We still don't know for sure. It could be more retail shops, restaurants, or other businesses. One thing's for sure: the location won't sit vacant.

The old Toys “R” Us in Lubbock closed back in 2018 and became an Overstock store for a bit before that moved to the old Best Buy. There's been some news that Toys "R" Us will be opening up more stores before the holiday season.

According to CNBC:

"Macy’s is joining forces with the owner of Toys R Us to bring an assortment of toys, games and other gadgets for kids to more than 400 of the department store chain’s locations and online."

We don't currently have any Macy's in Lubbock, so as for this location we don't think this will happen. But who knows, it's a big store.

The business owner has not released exactly what it will be, but I'm excited to find out and they said they will let us know as soon as possible.

The exact location for the building is 6101 Slide Rd, Lubbock, Texas 79414, right across from the South Plains Mall. This area is seeing a lot of new growth, like the new Hook & Reel place that owned up right next door. I love seeing run-down buildings re-used and fixed up for something new. Hopefully, this trend will continue in Lubbock.
