Would you want to ride in a self-driving car next year? If you live in at least one Texas city, you will be able to thanks to Lyft.

The rideshare company Lyft will launch its autonomous rideshare service later this year in Miami, Florida and will later begin operations in Austin, Texas in 2022. We aren't surprised that Austin is getting autonomous Lyft cars before anyone else in Texas, but is it really a good idea?

Driving in Austin stinks. I-35 is horrible and it won't be getting any better any time soon. According to KXAN, the driverless cars will actually have a driver in the car. The so-called "safety drivers" will make sure everything runs smooth. Lyft will be partnering with Ford Motor Company and Argo AI for the autonomous rideshare service according to KXAN.

“This collaboration marks the first time all the pieces of the autonomous vehicle puzzle have come together this way,“ Lyft co-founder and CEO Logan Green said in a Business Wire news release. “Each company brings the scale, knowledge and capability in their area of expertise that is necessary to make autonomous ride-hailing a business reality.”

At some point this will spread throughout Texas and the United States and eventually the "safety drivers" will be let go and driver won't be making any money. Rideshare services are quickly changing and soon it will all be AI driven. Not sure if I trust that yet. I guess we will see how it works in the clogged streets of Austin and I-35 before trusting it elsewhere.
