The Salvation Army in Lubbock Is Opening a Cooling Station to Help With the Heat

On Tuesday, July 19th, Lubbock's Salvation Army will be operating a cooling station that will be open to the general public.

The station, which will be located at their Family Services facility at the corner of 17th Street and Avenue J will be offering water, hydration and other cool treats to give some relief from the intense heat. According to a Salvation Army press release, the station will operate from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The public can either walk-in or use the drive-thru.

This cooling station comes as temperatures are expected to hit a high of 108 degrees Fahrenheit in Lubbock on July 19th. Lubbock's current July 19th record high is also 108, which was set back in 1936.

Major David Worthy of the Salvation Army says:

Our Empowerment Day Center for the Homeless has seen an increase in traffic due to the heat and assisting those folks during extreme weather reminds us that the extreme temperatures are impacting the entire community, not simply vulnerable population groups. We thought the public would appreciate the opportunity to enjoy something cold and refreshing in the midst of their day.

On top of the cooling station, the Salvation Army will be deploying their Pop Drop truck on July 20th at a yet-to-be-determined location to distribute freeze pops. Follow the Salvation Army on Facebook for updates on where the truck will be located.
