On today's "retro rack" is a singer who started out as an r&b singer and worked as a session player, playing the piano on Elvis Presley's song "Kentucky Rain". By the mid 70's he was a major star in country music.

 

Ronnie Milsap was born blind. By the time he was 8 years old, he had mastered the piano. He later learned to play the guitar, drums and string instruments.

While trying to make his mark and living in Memphis in the 60's, he left and moved to Nashville in the early 70's to try country.

In 1974, after signing with RCA Records, he scored with a Number One hit called "Pure Love", a song written by Eddie Rabbit. After that, Milsap never looked back. As they say, the hits just kept on comin'.

Milsap has won 6 Grammys for "Best Country Vocal Performanc, Male". He was named the CMA's "Male Vocalist of the Year" three different times and won the "Entertainer of the Year" award in 1977.

He also won the CMA's "Album of the Year" award four times.

One of his songs from 1985, "Lost in the Fifties Tonight(In the Still of the Night) won the ACM's "Song of the Year" award.
