Texas Radio Host Takes On Real Life “Yellowstone”
Have you ever watched the show Yellowstone and wanted to do something like that?
Yellowstone is an American neo-Western drama television show that started in 2018. The series follows the conflicts along the shared borders of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, a large cattle ranch, the Broken Rock Indian reservation, Yellowstone National Park, and land developers.
We have friends out in New Mexico that have a ranch that feels just like Yellowstone. The views are unreal, the work is hard, but it is so peaceful and a great place to be. It is actually one of New Mexico's least populated counties.
It is a weekend I look forward to every year and each year it is different. The first night we get there is always a late night because you have to wait for the steers to get there from the trucks and unload and count them.
The next morning is a long day. You get up early and start working the cattle, this year we did about 600 of them. Last year I was in charge of giving them all shots. This year I was in charge of removing the fly tags and adding new ones back on. Other people have other jobs but you would be surprised how many people you need to make it a smooth running line.
Once all of the steers are done we have to move them to different parts of their land. This is where the famous cattle drives you see come in. The show makes it look really easy but it is not. I loved this part because I got to ride my favorite horse Waffles.
After a long day of work, we get to eat some really good food around the campfire and hang out. Sometimes the work takes a couple of days to get done but this year we worked hard and finished it in one day.
We always stay for a couple of days so the next couple of days we got to just hang out and enjoy the company and land. We even go fishing sometimes too because they have an awesome lake and ponds.
Every year I go I am exhausted but also refreshed. It is so nice to be out in the wilderness and just get away.
