Driving Around Texas Tech Campus Just Got a Little Easier

Jump in the car and get those engines running. Traffic has become much more organized along 4th Street.

Lubbock’s newest traffic signal, located at the intersection of 4th Street and Knoxville Avenue, has been activated today, Monday, May 24th, 2021. The City of Lubbock announced this exciting update about the signal’s activation last Friday, May 21st.

The City of Lubbock Traffic Operations department was on site working hard on the new project. The department encouraged drivers to slow down and remain attentive while in the work zones in order to maintain a safe environment for everyone on the road.

The signal was operating in an All-Red Flashing mode before the new stop bars were installed. Once the process was complete, the lights began operating in Green-Yellow-Red mode. The crew will remain on-site to complete any remaining work after the signals are running properly.

This project comes at a great time. Nearly 20 percent of the Hub City’s population consists of college students (from Texas Tech University, South Plains College, Lubbock Christian University and Wayland Baptist University), based on a 2017 story from The Daily Toreador. That number has no doubt grown. Therefore, waiting for the spring semester to come to a close, and allowing many of the students to disperse and lessen traffic, is a smart move for starting a construction project such as this one.

This intersection’s new traffic signal marks another big development for the ever-growing city of Lubbock. Whether expanding to the southern or northern areas of the city or upgrading the central zones, Lubbock is constantly expanding into an even better place to call home.
