The Lubbock Police Department is investigating a bizarre incident in which a car was reported and found submerged in a lake in East Lubbock.

The incident took place on January 8th, 2020 at about 1:50 a.m. Police say a woman called LPD and said that a vehicle she was driving in the 2000 block of East Canyon Lake Drive had gone off the road and was submerged in a lake. She said that her and her dog were both trapped inside.

When police arrived at the scene, however, the woman was nowhere to be found. According to a police report, the officer who initially arrived at the scene reported seeing a vehicle partially submerged in the lake, with the rear window still visible and above the water line.

The officer also reported seeing a dog trapped inside the car and said it had moved to the rear window of the vehicle in an effort to stay out of the water. Unfortunately, police were unable to rescue the dog and it drowned when the vehicle fully submerged.

With the help of Lubbock Fire Rescue’s Dive Team and a local wrecker service, KAMC News reports that the vehicle was recovered from the lake and the dog's body was handed over to Lubbock Animal Services.

LPD Investigators say the evidence they've collected so far suggests that the woman who reported the accident likely was trapped in the vehicle at some point, but managed to escape and make her way back to land. She then walked to a nearby parking lot where police say she was picked up by an unknown person.

The woman has not yet been identified, and the reason for the accident is still under investigation.
