Jason Aldean Is ‘Definitely In’ for Another Carrie Underwood Duet
Jason Aldean hit another collaborative home run when he enlisted the help of Carrie Underwood for the ACM award-winning "If I Didn't Love You." It's clear the song worked well for both artists (an understatement), and if another tune of the same nature presented itself, Aldean would certainly work with Underwood again.
"I'm open to that!" he tells Entertainment Tonight. "I mean, I'm always open to collaborating with anybody. I felt like, with this particular song, Carrie was the voice that I heard for this song."
"But I really enjoyed working with Carrie," Aldean adds. "And if something comes up and we have a chance to do it again, and the song's right, I'm definitely in."
"If I Didn't Love You" is an Aldean song which lives on his Macon, Georgia double album, the second part of which arrives April 22.
For the "Trouble with a Heartbreak" singer, collaborations come from the music. It happened with Underwood, just as it did with Miranda Lambert when she joined Aldean for "Drowns the Whiskey" in 2018.
"We did a song with Miranda couple years back, and you know, it was more of a traditional kind of country thing that I heard Miranda on that song," he says. "So I really feel like the songs dictate where you go with a duet partner."
Aldean also worked with Kelly Clarkson on the 2010 hit "Don't You Wanna Stay?" That experience may have humbled him a bit.
"Kelly was actually my first choice for that song and I’ve just always been a fan of her voice," Aldean tells Today's Country Radio with Kelleigh Bannen. "And then when you get on stage or in the studio and start trading vocals with them, it’s like, man, you realize really quick that who the better singer in the room is, you know what I mean? Those guys are amazing singers and really powerful and just a lot of range. It’s really cool for me to get to work with people like that and sort of find my spot in the song to make my voice work with theirs and it’s been great."
It doesn't hurt that these collaborations with strong female artists have been so successful — "Don't You Wanna Stay" won two ACM Awards and was nominated for a Grammy, while Aldean's work with Lambert was a No. 1 hit. "If I Didn't Love You" won an ACM Award and received a Grammy nod this year. Then, on Monday night (April 11), the Aldean/Underwood collab won big at the CMT Music Awards: Video of the Year.
