Police Fired 19 Rounds at Armed Texas Student Inside School
More details are being released by the Mesquite Police Department after a shooting Monday. A 16-year-old student was shot at by police after bringing a firearm into the Pioneer Technology and Arts Academy in Mesquite.
According to the Dallas Morning News, officers were called to school Monday morning for reports of a student armed in the school's office. Reports say that police officers attempted to get the student to put the gun down, but he refused to comply. Three officers fired a total of 19 rounds at the student, who police say never fired his weapon.
The student was injured, at first it was reported that he had been shot in the leg, but the police, according to the Dallas Morning News, said it was unclear whether he was shot or "hit by shrapnel".
After being released from the hospital, the student was booked into a Dallas County Juvenile Detention Facility. Police confirmed that all 19 shots were confined to the office where the student was and that there were no classrooms behind the office. The Dallas Morning News also reported that Mesquite Police were asked about the officers' intentions in shooting at the student, a spokesman told the DMN:
Mesquite officers use deadly force to stop a threat of death or serious bodily harm, and do not fire warning shots or shoot to injure or disarm.
Since the shooting, the school has begun installing metal detectors and extra security cameras throughout the campus.
