Severe weather struck the South Plains on Thursday with multiple tornadoes reported from Morton all the way to the Reese Center area. KAMC reports that a tornado injured one person in the Shallowater area on Thursday evening. There were other reports of injuries as well throughout the area and also reports of high water rescues due to people driving down flooded roads.

Lubbock got lucky on Thursday overall though. The main threat became heavy rain, hail, and high winds. But we aren't done with the severe weather yet.

Severe Weather Threat for Lubbock and the South Plains on Friday

Friday is already shaping up to be a possible repeat on Thursday night with severe weather. Again, there are no guarantees that we will see hail or a tornado, but Friday morning, the National Weather Service put our risk of severe weather as "enhanced". That is the same risk that we saw on Thursday night and it means that Lubbock and the South Plains area could see wind gusts of over 80 mph, baseball to softball size hail and the possibility of tornados. And those tornados could be on the ground for a while.

When Will Severe Weather Strike on Friday?

There is no exact timing for severe weather on Friday. The National Weather Service does warn that storms could begin developing this afternoon or evening.

Pay attention to weather related updates and of course to tornado sirens if they go off as they did last night.
