One Of Lubbock’s Best-Kept Food Secrets Is Hiding In Plain Sight

On the north side of town sits an oddly placed little restaurant that is serving some absolutely amazing meals.

I first found out about Cuevas Drive-In in Lubbock after an extended hospital stay. A friend was taking me home, and the first thing on the agenda was lunch. He asked if we could call in an order from Cuevas Drive-In, and I had no idea what he was talking about.

He called and found out the special that day was carne guisada.

Could my newly gallbladder-less body handle it? I was willing to risk it because I LOVE carne guisada.

I'm happy to report it was amazing.

I'd also be remiss if I didn't tell you that the outside of the building looks a little like it was put together by the Little Rascals. This is a classic case of "don't judge a book by its cover," because since that first visit, I've been going back on the reg.

There are just no misses on the menu. You're going to have a hard time finding something that isn't great.

They have $11 daily specials that absolutely rule. At last check, it was hamburger steak on Monday, enchiladas on Tuesday, hand-battered chicken strips on Wednesday, chicken-fried steak on Thursday, and that incredible carne guisada on Friday.

They've also been known to change things up or add additional specials, so it never hurts to check their Facebook page or just call and ask, "What's good today?"

I should also mention that their hamburgers are legendary.

I've actually been hesitant to write about Cuevas for a long time. This is one of those places that can sell out shortly after lunch, and I'm taking a real chance here by letting more people in on the secret.

But they deserve the attention.

This is simply great people serving great food. Whether you sit down inside or grab your order to go, there's a very good chance Cuevas Drive-In is about to become another one of your favorite Lubbock restaurants.
