It’s My Potty, and I’ll Name It if I Want to: Cedar Rapids Fundraiser
There's a unique fundraiser going on in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A recently renovated arts center is selling the naming rights to shiny new toilets! If you donate a grand, you can have your name put on either a urinal or a commode. An engraved plaque will grace your location. The fundraisers also say here's a chance to honor a loved one, or a favorite artist or organization. What about that Christmas gift for the person who has everything?
The center did about $7 million in renovations because of floods in 2008 with the cost exceeding a healthy government grant. So, they're looking for money. One art center member complained about fundraising being a pathetic, degrading position, but this goofy event just might rake in the big bucks. Back in the mid-1990s a public radio station, WOI, offered donors naming rights to chickens. One radio staff member tells the Des Moines Register that one
man donated enough to name a chicken after each member of the Supreme Court. In Cedar Rapids, they're hoping that same guy needs a plaque over a toilet or two.
