A big Red Raider welcome to defensive back John Bonney, a grad transfer from the University of Texas.

Texas Tech and Kliff Kingsbury confirmed the transfer in a press release. "We're excited to add a veteran defensive back with the experience John has," Kingsbury said. "We will begin to get him acclimated with our team this week. John will be a great addition to this program."

Just a quick scouting report on John Bonney. He's a decent-sized physical defensive back who has played a lot of big-time college football for some really good defenses. Bonney exhibited poor decision-making skills early in his career; he chose the Texas Longhorns. But he's matured into a solid defensive back who will be able to play all three defensive back spots employed by David Gibbs' defense.

Bonney played 37 games in his career at Texas, starting 15 games across the secondary and totaling 87 tackles, an interception, two fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles and 14 pass breakups during that span.

Bonney's best game against the Red Raiders came in 2015, where he recorded a career-high nine tackles against Texas Tech.

"I will forever be grateful to the University of Texas for allowing me to earn my degree and compete as a student-athlete," Bonney said. "With that said, I’m excited to join the Texas Tech football program. I can’t thank Coach Kingsbury and his staff enough for providing me the opportunity to join this program, and I look forward to my first game as a Red Raider."

Kingsbury knew Bonney from his time at Houston, and Clay Jennings, Texas Tech's defensive backs coach, was with the Longhorns in 2016. Bonney will have one season with the scarlet and black, and is eligible to play on day one against the Ole Miss Rebel Landsharks.

To endear himself to the Red Raider faithful, here is Bonney's only career interception:

Bonney won't start immediately, but it's a pretty fortuitous transfer at a dire time just days after Octavious Morgan goes down with a potentially season-ending injury.

Good news is, he already knows how to make the Horns gesture. Now, he just needs to turn that upside down.
