The area affected by a chemical spill in Levelland on Monday, September 20th, is deemed safe by authorities.

According to a social media post by Levelland-Hockley County Emergency Management, the spill occurred at the EnviroTECH Facility, located at Highway 114 and Progressive Place in Levelland. The spill mainly affected residents in Kauffman Edition, but they also urged the public to avoid the area.

Officials have not said what chemical was spilled, but that is was a mild irritant, and concentrated exposure could cause eyes to water and difficulty breathing. There was also a strong odor similar to vinegar or pickles.

Officials say even though the area is safe, to still avoid the area if possible. The odor will also remain until cleanup is completed.

Some roadways were closed and traffic routes changed, but have since been opened up. Work crews are on scene to dilute the area, but the cause of the spill is unknown. An investigation into the spill has been initiated by Levelland-Hockley County Emergency Management.
