Way back in 2018, Newk's Eatery was "coming soon" to Lubbock. Now, it's actually, we promise, coming soon.

At least according to a press release from Mcdougal Companies:

After many rumors and much speculation, Newk’s Eatery is, indeed, coming to the Hub City.

The Mississippi-based fast casual restaurant chain will feature a restaurant in historic downtown Lubbock, on the first floor of McDougal Plaza (formerly Wells Fargo Center) at 1500 Broadway.

The press release went on to say that construction has already begun and that Newk's Eatery will be the "centerpiece" of the ground floor food hall.

So, what's a Newk's? I thought I had been to Mississippi, but it was actually Missouri. So I did some digging to find out. It appears Newk's is a lot like a Jason's Deli or a McAlisters. That mean sandwiches, soups, salads, pizzas, etc. I've become a salad freak, and theirs look amazing and different from what you usually find at a fast-casual place, so I'm totally here for it.

Also setting Newk's Eatery apart is their dessert menu, featuring Krispy Treats and cake in caramel, strawberry, red velvet, and chocolate. Cakes are available whole as well, so you can pretend you baked it yourself.

I'm very happy to see more and more exciting and fun things going up in our downtown. For a city our size, our downtown has been entirely too pathetic for too long. Now that First Friday Art Trail is back and with the opening of the beautiful Buddy Holly Hall, I think downtown stands a chance to be useful, beautiful, cool and fun.
