Lubbock High School Football Star Wins Texas Gatorade Player of the Year

The Gatorade Texas Football Player of the Year has been announced as Lubbock Coronado's own Sawyer Robertson. Not only is he Coronado's first Gatorade Texas Player of the Year, I believe he's Lubbock's first. In any sport.

Now, you'd imagine that the Texas Gatorade Player of the Year would be going to a University in Texas to play his collegiate athletics, but that is not the case. Not Texas Tech, nor the Longhorns, or TCU. Not even Baylor. Robertson will leave the state for the opportunity to play in the SEC West for Mike Leach at Mississippi State.

I digress.

Robertson was honored not only for his domination on the football field, but he's also a scholar in the classroom maintaining a weighted 4.59 GPA, having high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field.

Robertson joins past Texas GPOY winners like Former Longhorn running back Cedric Benson, Los Angeles Rams gunslinger Matt Stafford, Spencer Sanders the Oklahoma State Quarterback, and Kyler Murray who now quarterbacks for the Arizona Cardinals in the NFL.

The 6-foot-4 senior played both baseball and football for the Mustangs excelling on both but being a true standout on the football field. Coronado went 12-1 in 2020 while Robertson thew for more than 4,500 yards and 58 touchdowns with only seven interceptions. He also rushed for five touchdowns, just for good measure. That means Robertson was responsible for 378 points in 13 games.

Robertson raked in honors as an All-City Offensive Player of the Year, he was an All-State and Academic All-State honoree and was named the Class 5A Built Ford Tough Player of the Year.

Being named the Texas GPOY allows Robertson to Play it Forward and grant $1,000 to a local youth sports organization and potentially get that same organization $10,000.
