A big Book Festival is Being Thrown at a Lubbock Public Library

The City of Lubbock is hosting a two day book festival. The book festival, known as the Lubbock Book Festival, is a collaboration between the Lubbock Public Libraries and the nonprofit group Literacy Lubbock. The Lubbock Book Festival will be held in the Lubbock Mahon Public Library with many local authors scattered around the stacks of the first floor at their own booths. The authors will be able to sell books, sign copies, and interact with the readers.

There will be some scheduled events during the festival with different speakers and teachers such as authors, publishers, and industry experts. There will be a Writer's Workshop where all authors with any amount of experience or no experience are welcome to participate in. The festival will not just be restricted to the inside of Mahon Library but will also have outdoor performances by local songwriters, performers, and also just general entertainment from various organizations.

Sunday's portion of the book festival will focus on the importance of teaching children about an early love of reading. The theme for Sundays Kid Day will be Star Wars themed and will focus on children with activities inside and outside of the Mahon Library. To encourage kids to read Emmy award winning TV producer and sci-fi/fantasy children's book author Mari Mancusi visited Frenship Middle School to speak with sixth graders. Mancusi shared with the sixth graders the value of reading, storytelling, and writing along with gifting them a copy of her book Dragon Ops, thanks to Literacy Lubbock.

There will be a Prologue Party tonight, October 14, for VIP badge holders, sponsors, donors, and authors from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts, just down the street from the Mahon Library. The festival will officially start Saturday, October 15, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and continue on Sunday, October 16, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Mahon Library.
