David Ball grew up in a musical family and grew up in South Carolina. His dad was a Baptist preacher. He persuaded his folks to buy him a guitar and when he was in the seventh grade, he wrote his first song. He learned how to play the bass and with some of his friends would perform at bluegrass and country festivals.

In the 70's, Ball became a member of Uncle Walt's Band and they played the Austin Texas music scene.

Later, Ball moved the Nashville but he didn't find success with three single released on RCA Records. The experience did hook him up with producer Blake Chancy.

Chancy set Ball up with Warner Bros. Records and in 1993 the traditional and honky tonk song "Thinkin' Problem" hit big.
