A Wolfforth man has been indicted for an incident that resulted in the death of his 3-month-old child.

Lubbock County authorities say the incident happened on November 23rd, 2021, when emergency crews responded to a medical call. Upon arrival, deputies learned 24-year-old Joey Ortega, Jr. was taking care of his child, who was unresponsive. The child was taken to University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The doctor said the baby had serious injuries consistent with someone shaking the baby. Specifically, there were injuries to the baby's head as well as retinal hemorrhaging, fractured ribs and a brain bleed.

Ortega denied intentionally hurting the 3-month-old but admitted to shaking him.

Ortega was indicted by a Lubbock County grand jury on an aggravated assault charge. He remains booked in the Lubbock County Detention Center on a $500,000 bond.
