Why Does Hollywood Think All West Texas Cities Are the Same Place

I was browsing through channels the other day and came across a movie I hadn’t seen before. What really intrigued me was seeing Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen in the same movie together. I figured I would give it a shot, and found out that it was the movie The Guilt Trip.

It was a fairly entertaining movie about a son and his mother going on a road trip together, as the son is trying to sell a new product he invented. I really like both of these actors, and it was fun to see them work together.

However, there was one scene in the movie that bothered me. I’m sure it bothered any other Lubbockite that watched this movie too. They claimed to be in Lubbock as their next stop on the road trip, but they were very obviously not in Lubbock, Texas.

I knew something was wrong from the start because they said they were in Lubbock as they were driving past some hills and mountains. Anyone who's been in Lubbock knows that it's flatter than a board out here. I figured they just picked some random desert to film in and call it Lubbock, so I didn't mind too much.

Then, it got even worse when they stopped at a restaurant and make an attempt at a 72-ounce steak challenge. Most anyone in West Texas knows that the 72-ounce steak challenge belongs to The Big Texan in Amarillo.

I understand that Lubbock and Amarillo are pretty close to each other, and anyone that lives in California couldn’t care less about the layout of West Texas. I just don’t understand why they couldn’t just say they were in Amarillo. Especially because the steak challenge was pretty much the only thing they did there.

Why go out of your way to use an actual existing food challenge and not use the correct city? We may never know the answer and I guess we just have to settle with knowing Hollywood will always mix up West Texas cities like this.

I'm always down for a good brain challenge. This one however got the best of me.

It's always a fun time looking up address or cities and seeing them from a satellite point of view. You start pointing out landmarks and things you recognize.

One thing you don't account for however is something looking bigger or smaller than you seemed to think it was. So we started grabbing a bunch of these satellite pictures of cities and towns around Amarillo.

As we looked at them, we thought to ourselves, "how fun would this be to actually have to GUESS what these places are?". So away we went.

Amarillo is a pretty quirky place. We've got the Big Texan, the weird signs, and (obviously) the famed Cadillac Ranch. But more than that, there's a distinct culture of close-knit community, eccentrics, a thriving arts scene, and much more.

The point is, living in Amarillo is a unique experience. Because of that, it's really pretty easy to tell who's a native or a long-time resident. And I can prove it.
