Two Surprising Red Raiders Baseball Players Enter Transfer Portal

The Red Raiders had a solid baseball season finishing safely inside the top 15 after winning the Lubbock NCAA Regional and hosting the Lubbock Super Regional. Falling just shy of Omaha and the College World Series was a tough ending, but the future seemed bright with stars like Jace Jung, Chase Hampton, Cole Stillwell and Nate Rombach all returning. My initial thought was that those returning players were locked in. Bonus returns, like Micah Dallas if he wasn't drafted, would really vault this team back into CWS contention.

A few weeks later, the thought process is much different. Though, the goal is the same.

Rombach has announced his intention to transfer and is reportedly heading to Dallas Baptist. Micah Dallas is hedging that a return to college baseball would better serve him outside of Lubbock and has also announced his transfer.

All told, there are 10 Red Raiders with intentions to transfer out of Lubbock and into different situations. It's hard to fathom why, with the success of the Red Raiders, but sometimes a situational fit is more important than playing for Tim Tadlock and Texas Tech.

Among the 10 leaving are Levi Wells, Braydon Runion, Max Marusak, and Chase Webster. Both Runion and Marusak struggled at the plate during their times at Texas Tech but still have potential at the collegiate level. Especially the Amarillo native Marusak who has elite speed and defensive prowess, which he'll get to show off for the Ragin' Cajuns.

Wells and Webster had a combined 27 appearances this season and were locks to be in the bullpen rotation next year.

Now, is it good for Texas Tech to have 10 players transfer out? No. That will never be a good thing, but there are also several transfers coming in and a recruiting class around 20 players coming in. There are also still potential returners from the injury world like Hunter Dobbins and Brandon Birdsell that could get the Red Raiders where they want to be.
