Texas Tech Football Returns to NRG Stadium in 2021
Texas Tech Football announced Friday, August 21st, that it will open the 2021 season against the University of Houston in the Texas Kickoff at NRG Stadium in Houston. The Red Raiders' first trip back to NRG since playing Ole miss to open the 2018 season.
The game will take place over Labor Day weekend and will be played on an ESPN network.
Texas Tech also played at NRG, the home of the Houston Texans, when they played LSU in the AdvoCare Texas Bowl in 2015.
“We look forward to once again opening our season as part of the Texas Kickoff,” Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt said. “The city of Houston is home to one of Texas Tech’s largest alumni bases, and we can’t wait to play in front of so many great Red Raiders.”
Houston and Texas Tech have plenty of history together having played 32 times already with Texas Tech currently on a three-game winning streak against the Cougars. In fact Texas Tech is 8-2 in the last 10 games played against the Cougars, but the all-time record lands in Houston's favor with an 18-13-1 record against the Red Raiders.

Houston will still travel to Lubbock in 2022 as originally scheduled.
The original 2021 season opener with Florida International is now scheduled to be played on September 18th, 2021 in Lubbock.
