The Texas Rangers are investigating a deadly shooting involving law enforcement that occurred Wednesday, March 27 in Cochran County. Wednesday afternoon, around 4:15pm a DPS Trooper and a DPS Special Agent attempted to pullover a 2006 Chevy pickup for a traffic violation.

The driver, 40 year-old Leonardo Gallegos, Jr. of Muleshoe, refused to stop his vehicle and attempted to evade law enforcement. A trooper eventually was able to spike the tires of the pickup and force the vehicle to pull over in a field northwest of Whiteface.

Gallegos then exited the pickup and fired shots at the troopers and assisting law enforcement, they returned fire killing Gallegos at the scene.

According to DPS, Gallegos had warrants out for his arrest on a charge of Failure to Register as a Sex Offender, in Muleshoe, and Possession of a Controlled Substance, out of Reagan County.
