Covenant Children's Hospital in Lubbock is getting into the Halloween spirit this year for their annual fundraiser and are getting some unexpected spooky help.

For the 13th year, Covenant Children's is holding their annual Spirit of Children Fundraiser in partnership with Spirit Halloween.

Through this spook-tacular partnership, Spirit Halloween has been able to award Covenant Children's Hospital more than $218,000. A portion of past proceeds have gone to help Covenant Children's with hiring a part-time child life specialist for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, expand the artists in residence program, and create Lindsay's Playroom.

This year, Covenant Children's Hospital is looking to use their proceeds to get an American with Disabilities Act medical therapy dog to help patients cope better with challenging medical situations, procedures, and diagnoses.

Child Life Specialist Director Christine Neugebauer stated that "the program will offer our patients another outlet to socially connect and navigate the physical and emotional challenges they are experiencing through the companionship of this specially trained service animal.”

The therapy dog is also said to improve moods, emotions, and assist overall with helping patients reach their health goals while also improving the overall moral of staff and patients families.

The Spirit of Children does focus on making hospitals less scary for children and their families and will be supporting more than 150 hospitals this Halloween with a goal of raising $18 million this year. More information about the Spirit of Children Fundraiser can be found online including how to help even further.

This year there are three Spirit Halloween stores open in Lubbock.
