Over 5,000 signatures have been submitted by petition organizers in support of an ordinance to make Lubbock a "sanctuary city for the unborn," making abortions illegal within the city.

Around 4,500 of the signatures were determined to be valid, according to KAMC news, which was enough to validate the entire petition.

The Lubbock City Council has 30 days from November 2nd to validate or reject the proposed ordinance. If the Council rejects the proposal, organizers then have 20 days to request that the ordinance go to a public vote in May of 2021.

Back on September 25th, a committee filed an Initiative to outlaw abortion within the city. Members of the Initiating Committee are Senator Charles Perry, Dorothy Boyett, Katherine Cochran, Sandy Cisneros, Skyler Wachsmann, Mitchell Cochran and Erin Agee.

On October 13th, the petition was filed with the City Secretary, It contained around 5,700 signatures. By October 26th, 5,109 of those signatures were reviewed and 583 were disqualified.

On November 2nd, a resolution and certification of the petition will be presented to the Lubbock City Council. This is for the purpose of the City Council receiving all papers pertaining to the petition and proposed ordinance.

A written letter will also go out in the mail on November 2nd to each initiating committee member for the purpose of providing notice of the results and notice of the validity of the petition.
