Every year we hear the warnings. When it's hot outside, it's even hotter down in Palo Duro Canyon. It can get pretty dangerous when the summer heat turns brutal.

The Front Gate Is Opening Earlier

When my kids and I go down to the canyon, we always try to get there first thing when they open. With it getting hotter earlier in the day, we haven't gone as much recently.

Today, Palo Duro Canyon State Park took to social media to let everyone know they are trying new hours while it's so hot.

The front gate will be opening at 6 AM now, one hour earlier than usual. The front gate will still be open until 10 PM.

The Palo Duro Canyon State Park headquarters will still be open from 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM.

Go Early, Or Go Late To Try And Skip The Heat

It's going to be hot no matter when you go. Let's be honest. However, the worst of it will be in the middle of the day.

The Palo Duro Canyon State Park recommends you head out early; preferably before 10 AM. If you can't make it that early, they recommend starting after 6 PM.

Plan Ahead, And Take Plenty Of Water With You Go

I'm notorious for making impromptu trips into the canyon. For now, it might be best to plan those trips ahead of time.

You can make reservations ahead of time online by going to the Palo Duro Canyon State Park website. Check the weather forecast before you go to see how hot it's going to be, and pick a day when it's going to be a little cooler.

Also, be sure to take plenty of water with you. The recommended amount is one liter of water per hiker, per mile, that you plan to hike.
