A man was arrested over the weekend after a shooting occurred in a residence in central Lubbock.

KAMC News reports that the Lubbock Police Department responded to a call of a disturbance in the 2700 block of 42nd street around 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 30th. A man who had called into police said he had killed someone with a gun, but was still at the location of the incident.

When officers arrived on the scene, they discovered the body of 29-year-old Thomas Richardson laying on the floor of the living room. Richardson was declared deceased on the scene due to a single gunshot wound. The Lubbock Police Department called in the Metropolitan Special Crimes Units to aid in the investigation of the shooting.

Investigators with the Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit reported that the two men who knew each other prior to the incident got into a serious verbal altercation which led to 31-year-old Julio Gutierrez shooting Richardson.

A witness who lives near the residence came forward and told police they heard the men fighting earlier that day and that one of the men threatened to kill the other, followed by the sound of a gunshot.

Metropolitan Special Crimes investigators were able to obtain a murder warrant for Gutierrez, who was taken into custody by Lubbock police. He is currently being held in the Lubbock County detention center on charges of murder with a bond of $150,000.
