Neither Patrick Mahomes nor Davis Webb Got Their First Choice in NFL Jersey Numbers
Both Patrick Mahomes and Davis Webb are now in the NFL and have chosen the number they will wear for the rest of their NFL careers -- or until they change teams.
Mahomes wore the number 5 with Texas Tech football, Texas Tech baseball, his Whitehouse football and basketball and baseball teams. I'm sure when he was in little league, he also wore the number 5...but I can't confirm that. Now that he's in the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs, he can't wear his favorite number because someone else on the team has it.
That Chief is Cairo Santos, Pro Bowl place kicker.
No fear, though -- Mahomes has added his favorite number and his draft pick together for a brand new number. That number is 15.
Mahomes will be added to the pantheon of great Chiefs who have donned the number 15 threads. The list includes Todd Collins, Mike Mercer, David Whitehurst and Randy Duncan.
If you don't recognize any of those names, that's OK -- they're all backup quarterbacks and kickers. If Patrick Mahomes starts a whole year as the Chiefs QB, he'll be the greatest to ever wear the number for the red and yellow. Not much to live up to in Todd Collins.
Former Cal quarterback, Texas Tech graduate and now-New York Giant Davis Webb got his number over the weekend as well. Webb wore the number 7 at both Cal and Texas Tech, but that number is retired in New York thanks to Hall of Famer Mel Hein wearing the number during his time with the Giants.
Without the number 7 available, Davis Webb will wear the number 5.
No word on if Patrick Mahomes is jealous of Davis Webb for his jersey number selection.
Kerry Collins was the last notable number 5 for the New York Giants unless you count OU legend and used car salesman Rhett Bomar.
Collins started five years for the Giants, with his best year in 2000 going 12-4 and heading to Super Bowl 35 before losing to the Baltimore Ravens. In his Giants career, Collins went 35-33, ultimately getting replaced by some guy named Eli Manning.
