National I Love Horses Day was this week on July 15th and the great team on mounted patrol at our Lubbock Police Department tweeted this terrific photo! We love it and would like to send them a big shout out and salute!

The LPD's Mounted Patrol Unit includes 5 officers, plus a sergeant and a captain. They do a tremendous job and get out for as many as 59 events each year here in Lubbock, according to their website.

You can look out for them and have seen them in the community patroling downtown and events like First Friday Art Trail, Challenger Little League, ABC Pro Rodeo, National Night Out, and much more.

They are also out there in neighborhoods on patrol! So don't be surprised to see an officer on horseback around the next corner.

This great team holds other full-time positions in the department as well. Each officer owns and cares for his own horse. Donations help offset some feeding costs for the officers.

They recently attended the 11th Basic Mounted Patrol School as well as the TEEX Large Animal Rescue School co-hosted here in Lubbock with the Fire Department's Search and Rescue.

They get together to train each month according to their Facebook page. They posted this great recap:

When it comes to training, there's little horsin' around!
Earlier this week, our officers in Mounted Patrol met up for their monthly training.
They use various items of different shapes, sizes, and textures to help desensitize our hoofed friends so they're not taken by surprise by anything while out on patrol.

Some of the Mounted Patrol horses featured on their website are Davey, Frisco, Nellie, Gunner, LS, Tanner, Jiggs, Jobe, and Smokey. What a super line up! Hats off to this great team! You can follow this link to their site for more pictures and details. You can follow this link to their FaceBook page to keep up to date on our LPD's Mounted Patrol and where you might find our Lubbock heroes on horseback!

We love horses too and appreciate your hard work and sacrifice to help keep us safe here in Lubbock. Thank you for all you do!
