Maddie & Tae Seek Mom’s Advice in Somber Ballad, ‘Die From a Broken Heart’
They say that mothers always know best, and country duo Maddie & Tae bring this concept to life with their latest ballad, "Die From a Broken Heart." The somber tune has the narrative of a woman suffering from a terrible breakup calling her mom to vent her heartbreak and get some loving advice.
The song, written by Maddie Marlow and Tae Dye along with Jonathan Singleton and Deric Ruttan, starts off by dancing around the real reason for calling home. After asking for practical tips, such as how to get red wine stains out of a favorite dress, the serious queries begin.
"How does he sleep at night? / Momma, the nerve of this guy / To leave me, so easy," goes the chorus. "Am I gonna be alright? / I wanna kick myself for fallin' so hard / Momma, can you die from a broken heart?"
The song probes even deeper into tender areas, with Marlow and Tae wondering if the relationship was based in reality. All in all, it's a tearjerking exercise which is sure to hit home for many lovelorn listeners.
"Die From a Broken Heart" is the latest from the duo's as-yet-untitled second studio album, which the pair promises will delve into honest and raw topics, including ones more mature than they explored on their debut.
"When we made our first record it was a lot of experiences like moving away from home and being in high school and a lot of our younger years," they recently noted to Radio Disney Country. 'Now we're in our 20s and we feel like we're in those very pivotal young woman years."
At the moment it seems unlikely Marlow is suffering from any kind of broken heart, however. She and her longtime boyfriend, Jonah Font, got engaged in the spring.
Did You Know?: "Die From a Broken Heart" was written as Tae Dye was going through a difficult breakup.
Songs That Changed Modern Country? Maddie & Tae Have One:
Maddie & Tae's "Die From a Broken Heart" Lyrics:
Hey Momma, how do you get a red wine stain / Out of your favorite dress / Black mascara off a pillow case / Cure a one-too-many headache / Momma can I come and maybe stay a few days / This weekend or next / And hey, how do you get a red wine stain out of your favorite dress.
Chorus:
How does he sleep at night? / Momma, the nerve of this guy / To leave me so easy / Am I gonna be alright? / I wanna kick myself for falling so hard / Momma, can you die from a broken heart?
Can you ask Daddy if he's got time / To come and look at my front door / It got slammed last night and now it don't close right / And just promise that you won't tell him everything / And keep that pistol in the drawer / Momma, please don't say
I'm gonna laugh about this someday / You didn't see the way he drove away.
Can your knees give out from praying so hard / Can you go blind from crying in the dark / Was it ever really real / If he don't feel like I feel.
