Food trucks are all the rage in Lubbock these days, and this Saturday you can enjoy a wide variety of culinary fare while helping a good cause.

Lowe's Home Improvement at 5502 West Loop 289 is hosting the event this Saturday, May 21 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and it all benefits Starcare Specialty Health Systems to highlight May being Mental Health Awareness Month.

Brandi Ivey, the Community Relations Director for Starcare Specialty Health Systems, talked with us about the event and said they want to refer to the month of May as 'Mental Health Recovery Awareness Month' because she said recovery is possible for people with mental illness.

The following food trucks will be on site:

  • Blue Oasis Italian Ice & Ice Cream
  • Hank's BBQ & Catering
  • Owens Lunch & Go
  • Red Stone Pizza
  • J&D BBQ
  • The Cheese Chicks
  • La Pasadita

Having a brother with a mental disability, I know the challenges he faces navigating the day to day world and the challenges I face in trying to meet him where he is and understand his disability.

Starcare not only helps to educate their clients on living more independently, but they also help caregivers to better understand how to relate to the person with the mental disability.

Many of us have family members or friends who live with some sort of mental illness and we want to get the word out that there is help for that person and their caregivers.

So come out Saturday, May 21 to the Food Truck Event benefiting Starcare at Lowe's at 5502 Loop 289.

Sponsors for the event are Jagen Productions, Lubbock Exteriors, Basic Foundation Repair and Sew Unique and Abolish by Adrian: Corporate & Personal Training.
