Here Are the Lyrics to Keith Urban’s ‘We Were’
Keith Urban's newest single, "We Were," will draw comparisons to his 2013 duet with Miranda Lambert, "We Were Us," both because of its title and its lyrical content. Its slower tempo differentiates this boy-misses-girl tale from that one.
Written by Eric Church, Ryan Tyndell and Jeff Hyde, "We Were" is a step back from Urban's Graffiti U songs, which pushed the boundaries of country music, sonically speaking. Dann Huff is still Urban's co-producer, too.
"We Were" is presumably the first single from a forthcoming new album from Urban, though exact details have not been revealed. In April, the reigning CMA and ACM Entertainer of the Year released a cover of Irish singer-songwriter Foy Vance's song "Burden" that also keeps things simple, though at the time, Urban said that particular release was a one-off thing, not a sign of new music.

Keith Urban, "We Were" Lyrics:
We were just a couple years short of the age by my name on my fake ID / And still 'bout a hundred away from the day your daddy said you could run with me / We were a couple of line-steppers that just couldn't wait to step over the line / Never thinking we wouldn't last / I was your first and you were mine
We were leather jackets hanging onto Harley / Two heartbeats in the moonlight / We were both feet hanging out over the edge of a water tower skyline / At least there's a little bit of sweet in the bitter, though a part of me is always gonna miss her / I am who I am, I just miss who I was when we were
We were gonna make it, weren't we, baby? / Had it all laid out in out in our mind / By the time we knew time was runnin' out, we'd done run out of time / We were a downtown, Saturday night, last call, cover band / 'Til that last song played, never thought we'd fade like the stamp on the back of her hand
We were her on my shoulders, lighter in the air / "Pour Some Sugar on Me" / We were top down at Johnson's field when she whispered that she wants me / At least there's a little bit of sweet in the bitter, though a part of me is always gonna miss her / I am who I am, I just miss who I was when we were
Repeat First Chorus
Yes, I do / Friends say, oh well / Let that ship sail / You gotta let go of her / Just wasn't meant to be / But somewhere down deep, I still believe that we were
