Texas City’s Grandma Stand Will Melt Your Heart
The holidays are supposed to be joyful, but for many they can also be lonely. That’s exactly why a North Texas city decided to bring in something simple, sweet, and surprisingly powerful this season: a grandma.
In downtown McKinney, a cozy little booth called “The Grandma Stand” is offering visitors something many didn’t realize they were missing: a warm conversation, gentle advice, and that comforting grandma energy that just makes everything feel a little better.
What is The Grandma Stand?
The Grandma Stand is exactly what it sounds like.Set up downtown, the stand is staffed by rotating “McKinney Grandmas” who invite passersby to stop, sit, and talk. There’s no agenda, no judgment, and no rush- just a welcoming place to share stories, seek advice, or enjoy a few minutes of genuine human connection.
One of the grandmas, Nancy, says she was volunteered for the role by her daughter and quickly fell in love with it. From lighthearted chats to deeply personal conversations, she’s heard it all.
According to the project’s founder, Mike Matthews, many visitors open up about growing up without a grandmother or losing one too early in life. For them, the stand fills a quiet emotional gap, even if just for a moment.
Some people stop by to talk about heartbreak. Others share small wins, holiday stress, or memories they haven’t told anyone else. And sometimes, they just want someone to listen. Nancy says her focus is always kindness, no matter what someone brings to the conversation.
How the Grandma Stand Started
The Grandma Stand began in New York back in 2012, inspired by Matthews’ own grandmother, Eileen. Eileen was involved in the project until her death in 2018 at the age of 102. To honor her, every Grandma Stand is decorated in her favorite color: purple.
Since then, the idea has quietly expanded to cities like Omaha and Denver, and now, McKinney proudly joins the list, bringing the concept to Texas for the holidays.
More Grandma Moments Coming Soon
City leaders say the Grandma Stand has been such a hit that it’s expected to return in the spring, likely popping up again at the McKinney farmers market. For now, it’s serving as a reminder that sometimes the best holiday traditions don’t involve gifts, lights, or big events, just a chair, a conversation, and a grandma who’s happy to listen.
