It’s President’s Day! Here’s the History and Who is Closed

Presidents Day was established in 1879 to celebrate the birthday of the nation's first president, George Washington, born on Feb. 22, 1732. It later grew to include and honor our 16th President Abraham Lincoln who was born February 12th, 1809. In 1968 President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law Presidents Day become a Federal Holiday.

So who will be closed because of Presidents Day? Presidents Day is a federal holiday meaning most banks will observe the holiday and be closed, ATM machines will still be operational and online services to put money into your account.  The U.S. Postal Service will also be observing the holiday and not delivering mail on this Monday February 19th, its retail locations will also be closed and not available for stamp purchases or and other transaction on this federal holiday.

The U.S. Stock markets are also closed for the Presidents Day holiday which causes a muting of Global stocks because of the closure and a quiet session. Many schools are also observing Presidents Day so lots of kids are home playing.

Presidents Day is also a BIG retail day.  Many take advantage of the holiday to offer savings to their customers.  Big discounts on items you’ve been waiting to buy, from mattresses and kitchen appliances to fashion, furniture and electronics.
