Leander School Bus Accident Leaves Kids And Parents Shaken
The first day of school is supposed to be about new backpacks, freshly sharpened pencils, and maybe some nerves, but for parents in Leander, Texas, Wednesday turned into something much more frightening.
A Terrifying Moment for School Children and Faculty
A school bus carrying 42 children, most of them elementary school-age, rolled over on a rural road, and it left several injured and at least one person fighting for their life. As a father whose child will ride that same kind of bus within a year, my heart sank reading the news.
Details That Hit Too Close to Home
Officials said the bus drifted off the right side of the two-lane road “for an unknown reason,” before rolling onto its side. The accident occurred in the rain, although it is not clear if weather was a factor. Video from the scene showed the yellow bus lying on its side, roof crushed, and windows shattered. It was the kind of imagery that twists your stomach when you think about your kid sitting in one of those seats.
The Numbers That Matter Most
Fifteen students and the driver were transported to hospitals. At least one person has life-threatening injuries, and two others have potentially life-threatening injuries. Authorities did not say whether those with critical injuries were children.
A Father’s Concern for Tomorrow
It was a brand new 2024 bus with seat belts, so that probably reduced just how tragic this incident could have been.
Today’s news should remind parents that the first day of school does not end when the bell rings.
