How to Report Suspicious Activity This Holiday Season in Texas
The holidays are often full of joy and love, but for some, the nightmares don't get a vacation for Christmas. This is why the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is urging all Texans to report suspicious activity and help fight human trafficking, especially during this time of the year.
Prevent Human Trafficking in Texas this Christmas
Texas DPS, in a recent news release, stresses the importance of keeping others safe as so many are traveling for the holidays. If you notice something strange about a pair or small group of people travelling, then there might be a chance that you are seeing human trafficking take place.
Some key indicators of human trafficking that all Texans can and should remain vigilant of include the following:
- Someone appearing to be under the control of another
- Unable to handle their own possessions or unable to make eye contact/speak for themselves
- Someone who doesn't know where they are or where they are going
- Someone who is clearly malnourished, sleep deprived, or has visible injuries
- Someone's clothing is not suitable for the weather or is not age-appropriate
- Someone who lives where they work and the location has excessive security precautions
Obviously, some of these indicators are impacted by other factors in life and may just be coincidences, but it's important to still be careful and use your best judgement when encountering them.
How to Report Human Trafficking
If you see any of these signs or others that could indicate human trafficking, you should immediately call 911 to report the behavior. Once the operator picks up, you should proceed to relay as many details as you can about the individual, who they are travelling with, and where you are.
Other ways in which you can report human trafficking are by using the iWatchTexas online system. You can also call the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888 or text "BeFree" to 233733.
