Everyday thousands of motorists are on South Loop 289 traveling to their home, business, lunch, dinner, and just getting across town. The Loop is just one of the reasons why people say it takes about 15 minutes to get anywhere in Lubbock.

But that will all come to a screeching halt on Monday, May 1st.

Motorists have already been dealing with some traffic delays when construction and repairs began on the Westbound South Loop bridge at Quaker Avenue. Ramp and lane closures were still active on Sunday morning. The Texas Department of Transportation announced last week that construction will take place on South Loop 289 beginning Monday, May 1st at 9:30 a.m. If you've been on the South Loop since at least Friday, you have probably seen signs warning motorists about the construction.

And it's going to a pain. A big one.

According to the press release Eastbound traffic will be reduced to one land between Indiana and Slide Roads. The Quaker Avenue and Slide Road on-ramps will be closed during construction as will the Quaker Avenue turnarounds. Construction begins Monday, May 1st at 9:30 a.m. During construction, crews will replace bridge joints and make repairs to the deck and concrete.

Construction is expected to take four to six weeks to complete and that is if the weather cooperates. TxDOT officials warn motorists to avoid the area, find an alternative route, or plan to be delayed by traffic. It wouldn't surprise me at all if you see an increase in traffic on Milwaukee Avenue over the next several weeks.

Just remember, traffic in the mornings and afternoons, when people are trying to get to work or trying to get home, those will be the worst times on the South Loop.
