Details of the Crash

Early in the morning on Wednesday, a group of 14 were packed into a passenger van as they journeyed from Florida to an unknown destination. Shortly after 8am, officials received 911 calls pertaining to a single-vehicle crash heading northbound on Highway 287.

The cause of the crash was determined to be an overcorrection by the driver after the van briefly left the roadway, causing it to roll several times while avoiding other vehicles on the strip.

Of the 14 occupants, 13 were ejected from the van as it entered it's incontrollable rollover down the highway. Passersby recalled the event being very emotional and causing intense distress at the sight.

Devastation from the Accident

Texas DPS officials confirmed three were deceased at the scene, including the driver of the van. One other passenger was rushed to the hospital, but later succumbed to their injuries as well. Of the survivors, three were air lifted from the scene, while eight others were taken via ambulance.

Here's the kicker: 14 passengers were in the van but only one was wearing their seatbelt... That person walked away from the crash with minor injuries.

Wise County officials implored citizens to take this as a lesson to always wear your seatbelt. They may be annoying at times, but they DO save lives.

No other injuries have been reported due to the accident, and no other vehicles were involved.
