It may surprise some in Texas that medical marijuana dispensaries operate in Texas, but they do. There just aren't a lot of them and medical marijuana in Texas isn't as accessible as it is in other states.

But there are signs of medical marijuana expanding in Texas and with that, more places where Texans can pick up a prescription. There are currently three licensed dispensary options in Texas. Fluent, Goodblend, and Texas Original. Goodblend operates 8 locations around the state. Fluent operates online and delivers, and Texas Original operates pickup 14 locations.

As I wrote earlier, there is expansion happening. The Houston Chronicle reported on Thursday that Texas Original has opened a new location in Sugar Land, Texas. It's the first medical cannabis location in Fort Bend County. The store operates as a prescription pick up location, as do the other locations and is open 11am to 3pm on Thursdays. It's the fourth location in the Houston area for Texas Original.

Right now, Texas' medical marijuana program falls under the state's Compassionate Use Program which passed in 2015 and was expanded in both 2019, and 2021 to include more conditions. As of today, the program is open to people with the following conditions.

  • epilepsy
  • a seizure disorder
  • multiple sclerosis
  • spasticity
  • amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
  • autism
  • cancer
  • post-traumatic stress disorder
  • an incurable neurodegenerative disease

So will Texas see an expansion of medical marijuana in Texas along with more access to dispensaries? I believe so, but for now they will be highly regulated compared to some other states that have passed and opened up medical marijuana to the general population.
