A family of four collided with a pickup truck after driving the wrong direction down the freeway in Fort Worth. The family along with the passenger of the pickup truck died at the scene.

Details of the Forth Worth Loop 820 Crash

According to NBC DFW, a family of four was traveling the wrong way on Loop 820 in Forth Worth early Sunday morning at 3.30am. Their sedan then struck a pickup truck as they were driving the opposite direction on the loop.

The two vehicles collided in a fiery explosion. The entire family--mother, father, and two children--were killed immediately.

The pickup truck was driven by a man with his fiancée in the passenger seat who also died during the accident. The man survived and was rushed to the hospital with multiple broken bones.

Officers who responded to the incident mentioned that they will be questioning the man once he is responsive in the hospital, but they also mentioned that they acknowledge the emotional weight of what has happened. Not only did the man lose his fiancée, but he also was the only survivor during a car accident that claimed five lives.

This entire experience was an unnerving reminder for the Fort Worth police force as they recently lost a sergeant to a similar event.

In August, Sgt. Billy Randolph was working a crash scene involving a semi-truck spilling fuel along the interstate. He was struck by an alleged drunk driver going the wrong way down the freeway as he stood alongside his cruiser.

Officials urge drivers to stay safe when encountering a wrong-way car on the road. They include the following safety tips when driving late at night:

  • Keep your eyes on the horizon
  • Stay in the far right lane
  • Flash your high beams at a wrong-way driver
  • Pull over if possible
