After 34 Years, 4th on Broadway in Lubbock Is Ending

After 34 years of hosting the largest outdoor free July 4th celebration in Texas, Broadway Festivals is closing, and it appears as though the annual 4th on Broadway parade and party in the park is over as well.

In a press release on Monday, organizers thanked the Lubbock community along with the volunteers for their support over the last 34 years. Broadway Festivals pointed to the death of Don Caldwell, along with "other circumstances" as the reasons why Broadway Festivals is ceasing operations. Terri Caldwell, Don's wife, called the decision "heartbreaking".

“It’s heartbreaking for the Caldwell family to see this come to an end. I’m praying someone with Don’s love and dedication will step up and keep it going. On behalf of my husband, Don Caldwell, and the Caldwell family, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who had a hand in making this event a total success for those 34 years – every sponsor, vendor, the mayor and the city council, the sheriff and his team, every police officer, EMT, security officer, parade entry, musician, vocalist, bus driver, business owner, lighting company, audio company, banker and VOLUNTEER who touched this wonderful endeavor- THANK YOU! And may God richly bless each one of you.”

 

Does This Mean The End of 4th on Broadway in Lubbock?

As of right now, it appears as though the massive event that included a parade, party in the park, live music, activities throughout the day, and a huge fireworks show is over after 34 years. 4th of Broadway was known as the largest free festival in Texas.

However, another non-profit organization could put on another July 4th celebration this year or in the future. It takes a lot of time and work, but we wouldn't be surprised to see a future July 4th celebration take place.
