A Piece of The Blarney Stone Has Been At Texas Tech for 85 Years

For 85 years, Texas Tech students and visitors from around the world have visited and kissed, this piece of stone on the Texas Tech campus in Lubbock.

According to lore... and the Texas Tech website, on St. Patrick's Day of 1939, Texas Tech announced to the world that they had discovered a piece of the Blarney Stone. The story goes that the stone was found by a group of petroleum engineers while they were on a trip. After running tests, the research showed that the stone was a piece of the Blarney Stone. Texas Tech claims that the piece they have is identical to piece of the Blarney Stone that went missing in 1659.

What Is The Blarney Stone?

The original Blarney Stone is located in Ireland and is built into battlements of Blarney Castle. The stone was set into a tower of the castle in 1446. Tourists from all over the world visit the Blarney Stone and kiss it because according to legend, kissing the Blarney Stone gives the kisser the gift of eloquent speech.

Do People Kiss the Texas Tech Blarney Stone?

You bet they do. Over the last 85 years, who knows how many lips have been on the Blarney Stone at Texas Tech. We guess it's probably in the thousands. According to Texas Tech lore, seniors who kiss the stone when they graduate will receive the gift of eloquent speech.

Where is the Blarney Stone at Texas Tech?

Students and visitors can find the stone in front of the old Electrical Engineering Building. For those who are driving, there is a parking lot off Canton Avenue, Lot R04 across from the Track. The stone is located to the East of the parking lot as you are walking to the Engineering Key.
