‘Winter Is Here!’: Atmos Energy Shares How to Stay Safe in Freezing Weather
In light of the intense winter weather coming to Lubbock in the next few days, Atmos Energy, a natural gas provider in Lubbock, has shared tips via email on how to keep you and your home safe in freezing temps.
This coming Monday, January 15th has a forecasted high of 30 and low of 5, with Tuesday being similarly frigid with a high of 31 and low of 18. Fortunately, things should warm back up after that with Wednesday forecasted at a high of 57 and low of 37.
This is what Atmos Energy shared:
- Never use an oven or a gas stovetop to heat your home.
- Protect natural gas meters. Natural gas meters are weather-proof; however, to ensure that the meter keeps working smoothly, remove snow and ice from natural gas meters with a broom or brush. Never kick or chip snow and ice away with a hard object. Call us at 866.322.8667 if you have concerns about your meter.
- Make sure external vents for dryers and other natural gas appliances are clear. Blocked vents can lead to a dangerous buildup of carbon monoxide gas. If you have questions about proper venting, contact a licensed plumber or qualified contractor.
- Minimize the risk of frozen pipes. Leave faucets running at a trickle, leave cabinet doors open, and close all doors and windows to keep heat inside.
- Save money and energy by setting your thermostat to 68 degrees during the day and 58 degrees when you are away from home (where safe to do so).
These are simple things that can make a difference when intense winter weather hits. However, it doesn’t cover things like having emergency kits on hand, how to stay warm if you lose power, and other tips in case of a terrible storm.
If you would like to learn more about those things, I suggest doing your research and finding a source like this guide, that can provide helpful information.
