The 100 Black Men of West Texas set to Host 26th Fishing Derby

One West Texas group is bring families together with their annual free fishing event for the community. The 100 Black Men of West Texas announced that they would be hosting the 26th Annual Charles and Rose Hankson Memorial Kids' Fishing Derby.

This annual event will be taking place at Mae Simmons Park at Martin Luther King Boulevard and Canyon Drive. To get ready for this event The 100 Black Men of West Texas has organized for the lake to be stocked with over 2,000 pounds of catfish so kids have a very good chance of catching at least one fish during this family event. KAMC news reports that there is no pre-registration for this event and instead will be done onsite at Mae Simmons Park.

There will be a limited supply of fishing rods and reels available for loan but anyone who has their own is more than welcome to bring their own. This event is designed to bring families together for a day of wholesome entertainment while enjoying the great outdoors. In honor of this being a community wide event there will be free burgers and hotdogs available along with free prizes based on what the children catch.

The goal and mission of the 100 Black Men of West Texas, as stated by their website, is to

improve the quality of life for all residents of Lubbock Texas and West Texas with emphasis on empowering African-Americans.

This event will be on Saturday, July 15, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Dunbar Lake and all families are encouraged to bring their children out to this family friendly event. Also bring sun protection such as hats, umbrellas, sunscreen and water to stay hydrated during this event.
